When we began filming 8 years ago, Tambogrande’s quest seemed hopeless: a small valley of fruit farmers taking on a wealthy foreign mining company. Even\u00a0 more discouraging, the company, (Canada’s Manhattan Minerals) was backed by Peru’s powerful mining industry and top politicians.<\/p>

But the people we met in Tambogrande never doubted the outcome. They knew their cause was just and they would win.<\/p>

Their belief was based on one simple fact that the company and politicians failed to grasp: the overwhelming majority of the people did not want a mine. To be exact, when put to the democratic test, 98.6 percent were against the mine. And when an entire community unites, standing firm and resolute and simply saying \u201cno\u201d, nothing short of brute force can make them leave their homes and land.<\/p>

We moved up north, to be close to Tambogrande. As the months and years\u00a0passed, we saw the town’s opposition mature from frustrated anger and violence to peaceful but unbreakable resistance.<\/p>

In November 2003, when the final outcome of the story was still uncertain, we realized the town had already won. It was the final rally of a three-day strike against public hearings on the mine and over 10,000 people had crammed into the town’s main square, pulsing and cheering as one. Manhattan had not yet lost its concession in Tambogrande, but the crowd was claiming victory. The sea of human bodies formed an impenetrable shield. A mood of celebration infused the event and as the afternoon sun began to fade, the rally ended in a blur of jubilant dance and music.<\/p>

The festivities were well deserved. Tambogrande’ s citizens had put everything into their campaign, going far beyond the usual fare of daily protests in Peru.<\/p>

Marches became cultural events that celebrated agriculture as much as they spurned mining. Instead of waving sticks in anger, proud farmers carried mangos, limes, watermelons, squash and other local produce in their upraised fists. Local musical groups wrote and performed emotional songs in the style of traditional ballads and waltzes. Youth designed posters, web pages and internet alerts winning supporters in the capital city and around the world. Dancers put on lime costumes and whirled through the streets and the town’s politicians held the world’s first referendum on mining.<\/p>

At the helm, Tambogrande’s leaders exhibited v i s ion; they educated themselves on the scientific and legal aspects of the case and worked tirelessly, sacrificing their time, energy and even personal security.<\/p>

Their efforts bore fruit, and also malice. Godofredo Garcia Baca, the charismatic agronomist and mango farmer guiding.<\/p>

Tambogrande’s campaign was assassinated. His memory became a symbol of perseverance and strength, uniting the valley’s people and guiding them down a revolutionary path of non- violent struggle.<\/p>

Tambogrande’s story taught us that anger, violence and sorrow can be transformed into peaceful resistance; that the small can overcome the rich and powerful. And that old clich\u00e9: that unity is strength.<\/p>

Godofredo, may your memory continue to inspire all of us to overcome impossible odds.<\/p>
